EVENT OVERVIEW

National Dog Day is celebrated each year on August 26 – it is a day of canine celebration!  Each year, in honor of National Dog Day, events are held around the country where families can gather, with their dogs, for fun-filled activities, and most importantly, to try and bring a forever home to thousands of homeless dogs.

One lucky location is selected each year by the National Dog Day’s founding organization, the Animal Miracle Foundation, to host the National Dog Day Main Event.  For 2008, Solomons, Maryland has been selected for this honor.  On Saturday, August 23, the Calvert Marine Museum campus will be the site of this national event.

In honor of National Dog Day 2008, Solomons will be hosting “Woof Weekend” offering local citizens and visitors to get the most of their visit to the area.  Local businesses will be offering dog-related merchandise and events on Friday, August 22 through Sunday, August 24.  The event will kick off with a black-tie event at the Holiday Inn Select Solomons on Friday.  On Saturday, the Main Event will take place with a festival at the Calvert Marine Museum.  The day will feature educational program, rescue group meet and greets, visits with national celebrities, musical performances, business and food vendors, canine demonstrations, pet pageants, and much more!  The “FURocious Concert” will be held on Saturday evening on the Calvert Marine Museum outdoor pavilion featuring a list of performers who share in the desire for kindness to animals.

All teams selected for participation will be awarded a prize by National Dog Day sponsor Maerten’s Fine Jewelry and Gifts, and the Duke & Duchess title winner/s will receive a special “grand” prize valued over $1500 provided by the Animal Miracle Foundation.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE; ENTER THE COMPETITION!

To help fund this event, and to provide donations to several local animal rescue organizations, the National Dog Day Main Event will feature a Duke & Duchess Contest.  Local citizens will team up to vie for the title of Duke & Duchess of the Main Event.  The team that gathers the most “doggie treats” will earn this prestigious title.  Each dollar raised equals one doggie treat.  The Duke & Duchess will be crowned at the Friday evening Black Tie Event, and local rescue groups selected for participation in the Main Event will be presented with their share of the proceeds prior to the FURocious concert on Saturday evening.

The following rescue groups, and shelters will receive proceeds from this contest:

Animal Miracle Foundation

Calvert Marine Museum

Calvert County Humane Society

Calvert Animal Welfare League

St. Mary’s Animal Welfare League

Patuxent Animal Welfare Society

Greyt Expectations

Second Hope Rescue

Golden Retriever Rescue of Southern Maryland
